Want to boost your career, conduct ground-breaking research, and receive hands-on mentorship on an American funded program? If so, consider applying to the Borlaug Fellowship Program, sponsored by the United States Food and Drug Association via the Foreign Agricultural Service. The program aims to promote food security and economic success by collaborating and training foreign researchers. Generally, the program seeks professionals (scientists, researchers, & policymakers) in their mid to early stages of their career. Fellows work individually with a mentor at a U.S. based university, research center, or government facility. At the termination of the 8 to 12-week period of the program, mentors will have the opportunity to come visit MULS to further research works. Participants will have the opportunity to attend conferences and events, such as the annual World Food Prize Symposium. More information can be found on the website, though keep in mind that the website is for this current year. Applications currently being accepted are for the year of 2025, so the presented application information is not relevant to 2025 candidates (the deadline of April 8th on website is not correct). In the past, we have had 4 successful applicants from MULS who conducted research in the U.S.

Those interested should propose a topic of research in the following areas:

  1. Animal Health (risk management, biosecurity, etc.)
  2. Biotechnology (genetic engineering, gene editing, equivalence, etc.)
  3. Food Safety (shelf life, biological and bacterial hazards, maximum residue levels, etc.)
  4. Plant Health (risk management, biosecurity, etc.)
  5. Climate Smart Agriculture (developing or implementing new sustainable practices, etc.)

Proficiency in English is required.

To apply, propose a research topic and write a few paragraphs including: your name, a title of the potential research topic, a summary of the topic, and what you hope to achieve through the research.

The deadline to submit a proposal is March 11th, 2024.
